Energy prices have risen since the start of the Iran war. In view of this, the USA is once again easing sanctions on Russian oil for a few weeks.
The sale and delivery of Russian oil loaded onto ships until Friday night will be exempt from US bans until the night of May 16 (US East Coast time), according to a US Treasury Department agency. This is yet another attempt by the USA to calm global energy markets.
The USA had already made such an exception in mid-March, which lasted until April 11. Critics complained that this would strengthen Russia financially. The Kremlin uses the revenue from the oil industry to finance its war against Ukraine.
The USA has been imposing sanctions on the Russian oil sector for years. Countries and companies that do business with Russia could normally run the risk of becoming the target of sanctions themselves.
