According to US media reports, the number of victims has risen to at least 40 following the severe storms in the South and Midwest of the USA. In the state of Missouri alone, twelve people died as a result of the tornadoes and storms. Dozens more people were injured.

The storms began on Friday. A total of around 80 tornadoes were reported in eight states - Missouri, Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana, Illinois, Tennessee, Alabama and Indiana - and dozens were confirmed as such. By comparison, according to the German Weather Service, there are an average of around 45 tornadoes per year in Germany.

Tornadoes occur when there are large temperature differences and often occur together with thunderstorms. A trunk-like tube of cloud extends from the thundercloud down to ground level.
