According to the Russian Consul General in Hurghada, Viktor Voropaev, at least four Russian tourists died in the accident. A total of 45 Russian tourists, including children, were on board, he told the Russian state news agency Tass.
The boat was named "Sinbad". According to media reports, it was a so-called semi-submersible with a lower deck from which the underwater world can be observed. The passengers reportedly wanted to look at coral reefs. The boat sank in front of the marina of a hotel in the city of Hurghada, which is popular with holidaymakers.
Rescue operations are continuing at midday. According to media reports, 21 ambulances were on the way.
Accident in November
Just last November, a vacation boat with more than 40 people on board sank in the Red Sea off the coast of Egypt. Six bodies were recovered and five people were presumed missing - including two Germans. At the time, it was the motor yacht "Sea Story", which was taking tourists to diving spots in the Red Sea.
For tour operator Tui, Egypt is the third most popular destination during the Easter vacations. 13 percent of holidaymakers spend their vacations there, as the company announced last Friday.
