The families of the 40 dead and 116 injured in the Crans-Montana fire disaster will each receive a lump sum of CHF 10,000 from the canton of Valais. This was decided by the cantonal government on Wednesday.

The aim is to help those affected with as little administrative effort as possible, the cantonal government announced. The canton is also setting up a special donation account into which private and institutional contributions can be paid.
These funds are expressly not intended to cover the costs borne by the canton. The distribution of the donations is to be regulated at a later date. A foundation is to be set up to manage and distribute the donations received.
Furthermore, Valais prohibits the use of pyrotechnic objects in publicly accessible facilities. The devastating fire in the "Le Constellation" bar on New Year's Eve was probably caused by sparklers on champagne bottles. They had presumably set fire to the bar's sound-absorbing foam ceiling.
