The canton of Valais believes it is on the right track when it comes to wolf regulation. The aim is not to eliminate all wolves, but to enable wolves and humans to coexist in the long term, FDP State Councillor Frédéric Favre told the media in Sion on Tuesday.

According to the new hunting ordinance, which came into force on February 1, the canton of Valais intends to continue reactive and proactive wolf regulation. The aim is to enable humans and wolves to coexist in the long term and to reduce conflicts with mountain agriculture and tourism, explained Favre.

The Valais Department of Hunting, Fishing and Wildlife has drawn up an assessment of the wolf presence in the canton in 2024. According to the report, 341 farm animals were killed in 112 attacks last year. 35 wolves were shot.
