Venice's mayor has issued a decree banning music events, the serving of drinks on officially approved terraces and the sale of food and drink by hawkers in certain areas of the city from 10 p.m. on Christmas Eve. The setting off of fireworks is also prohibited.
According to the publication on the municipality's website, the regulation applies within a radius of 500 meters around churches and other religious buildings as well as in certain squares in the Mestre district, which is located on the mainland. Food stores must close at 10 p.m. on Christmas Eve and may only reopen at 6 a.m. on Christmas Day.
According to the municipality, the measure is intended to prevent the kind of disturbances that have repeatedly occurred at major events in recent years. The regulation is also intended to meet the wishes of local residents for peace and quiet over Christmas.
Crowds expected on New Year's Eve
The city has also issued regulations for New Year's Eve. From 7 p.m. on December 31 until 6 a.m. on New Year's morning, the sale of drinks in glass and plastic bottles and cans is prohibited. Drinks in glasses or glass bottles may also not be consumed on the streets. Large crowds are expected in the city on New Year's Eve. As a result, there may also be restrictions for pedestrians.
The lagoon city also tries to channel the rush of tourists throughout the year. For some time now, the city has been charging short-stay visitors on certain days. In 2026, it will be ten euros - on 60 days.
