The operator of Vienna Airport has sued eight climate activists for damages. The men and women took part in a protest action in Vienna-Schwechat on Wednesday and, according to the airport, disrupted operations.

The activists had spilled paint and delayed the departure of a plane, an airport spokesperson told the APA news agency on Saturday. Among other things, they are accused of damaging property, disturbing public order and several violations of the airport operating regulations. The airport is also taking civil action against the individuals and demanding compensation.

Further protests were announced for Saturday at Vienna Airport. Activists want to disrupt air traffic in several countries during the vacation travel season. There have already been several actions in the past few days, including at Zurich Airport. There, activists wanted to block an access road to the airport. The police broke up the protest within minutes.

At Cologne/Bonn Airport, several flights were canceled on Wednesday because activists had stuck themselves to the tarmac. The same reason led to the suspension of air traffic at Frankfurt am Main Airport on Thursday.
