Volkswagen's sales figures are on the rise again after a weak previous year: From January to March, the Group delivered a good 2.1 million vehicles of all Group brands worldwide, 1.4 percent more than in the same period last year, according to the Wolfsburg-based company. In the previous year as a whole, VW had recorded a drop of 2.3 percent.
Core brand on the upswing
Above all, the previously weakening VW passenger car brand made up ground. The core brand, which accounts for more than half of all sales, saw an increase of a good 5 percent in the first quarter to a good 1.1 million vehicles.
In contrast, worldwide deliveries at Audi fell by 3.4 percent to around 383,400 vehicles, and at Porsche by almost eight percent to 71,500.
There was a significant drop across the Group in China, where VW delivered 644,000 cars, a good seven percent fewer than a year ago. However, growth in the rest of the world more than compensated for this.
Strong increase in the USA
In Europe, sales rose by 3.7 percent. In the USA, sales even increased by 6.2 percent. Experts see this as an anticipatory effect due to US President Donald Trump's new car tariffs, which have been in force since the beginning of April.
There was a significant increase in e-cars: 216,800 all-electric vehicles of all Group brands were delivered worldwide in the three months, almost 60 percent more than a year ago. In Europe, the number more than doubled compared to the weak first quarter of 2024 to 158,000 vehicles.
