Business remained weak in the important Chinese market, where the Group is struggling with tough price competition from local electric car suppliers. In total, VW handed over 660,300 vehicles with all its brands in the People's Republic, a decrease of 7.2 percent.
In Europe and the USA, on the other hand, sales of fully electric cars (BEV - battery electric vehicles) rose sharply. In the previous year, business with electric vehicles in Europe had been negatively impacted by cut or terminated subsidy programs, among other things. In the USA, purchases brought forward before the end of purchase incentives are likely to have driven this year. Overall, VW increased its sales of electric cars by a third to 252,100 vehicles.
At 1.17 million cars, the Volkswagen brand remained at the previous year's level in the third quarter. Deliveries at the important Group subsidiary Audi fell by 2.6 percent to 392,200 cars. The sports car manufacturer Porsche AG sold 66,100 cars, a decrease of 5.7 percent.
At the commercial vehicle holding company Traton (including MAN and Scania), Volkswagen recorded a drop of 16.2 percent to 71,500 trucks and buses.
