Following talks with his US counterpart Marco Rubio, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul does not expect the USA to take military action to annex Greenland. "I have no indication that this is being seriously considered," said Wadephul.

"I believe that there is a common interest that we should and will take care of the security issues that arise in the Arctic region," the CDU politician told the media after a meeting with his US counterpart Marco Rubio in Washington.

Wadephul went on to say that NATO was in the process of "developing more concrete plans" for security in the Arctic, which would then be discussed with the USA. Although it has not yet been possible to do this, "the willingness to discuss these issues in the NATO area is of course there on all sides".

US President Donald Trump has repeatedly made it clear that he wants to bring the island, which officially belongs to Nato partner Denmark, under the control of the United States.
