Following a fatal knife attack on a worshipper in a mosque in the south of France, the suspect has handed himself in to the police in Italy. An investigating judge must now determine the actual motive of the attacker, said public prosecutor Abdelkrim Grini in Alès, as reported by the broadcaster France Info.

It cannot be ruled out that the perpetrator acted for Islamophobic reasons. The wanted 21-year-old Frenchman turned himself in late Sunday evening at a police station in Pistoia, hundreds of kilometers from the scene of the crime.

The attacker had broken into the mosque in the small town of La Grand-Combe on Friday and killed a young worshipper with up to 50 stab wounds. Immediately after the attack, he filmed the victim with his cell phone and insulted Allah. On his video, he made confused statements about his intention to act again.

At the time of the crime, the victim and the perpetrator were alone in the building; it was not until the morning that other visitors to the house of prayer found the dead man. France reacted with disgust to the crime.
