The White House has sharply criticized the online retailer Amazon. White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt called it a "hostile and political act" that Amazon is apparently now indicating on its prices how much US President Donald Trump's tariffs will add to the price. Leavitt said she had just spoken to the president about this.

Asked whether Amazon founder Jeff Bezos was still a Trump supporter, the spokeswoman said she did not want to discuss the president's relationship with Bezos, but reiterated that this was a "hostile and political act". Bezos had recently sought closeness to Trump and had also exerted influence at the Washington Post, which he owns. Before the US election in November, for example, he had stopped an already written election recommendation for Donald Trump's opponent Kamala Harris, triggering criticism within the editorial team and among readers.
