Following the severe earthquake in Myanmar, the World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the highest level of emergency.

"WHO has classified this crisis as a level 3 emergency - the highest level of activation under its emergency response program," the United Nations health agency said. Eight million dollars are urgently needed to save lives and prevent outbreaks of disease within the next 30 days, the WHO said on Sunday evening. Due to the limited medical capacities in the poor country, there is a high risk of infection for the many injured. There is also an increased risk of disease in the south-east Asian state following the quake. Electricity and water supplies have been interrupted in many places in Myanmar, "which increases the risk of outbreaks of water- and food-borne diseases". A 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar and Thailand on Friday. At least 1,700 people were killed in Myanmar and at least 18 people died in neighboring Thailand.
