Giauque-Kunz won with their Chasselas, Bielersee AOC 2023 church wine. The two had already won the award last year, as the canton of Bern wrote in a press release on Tuesday.
The best Bernese wines in the categories Chasselas, White Specialty, Riesling-Sylvaner, Pinot Noir and Red Specialty were also chosen at the award ceremony in Twann. They will be allowed to use the designation "Bernese Wine of the Year 2024" for marketing purposes, it was reported.
The special prize for the best wine made from fungus-resistant (Piwi) varieties was awarded for the second time. Red and white wines with a piwi variety content of at least 70 percent can take part in the competition. In this way, the canton aims to support the growing market for sustainably produced wines. This special prize was won by Heinz and Gabriela Tschanz.
A total of 150 wines were entered in 2024, 10 fewer than in 2023. The aim of the competition is to promote the production and sale of quality wines in the canton of Bern by the Department of Economic Affairs, Energy and the Environment and the canton's winegrowing associations. The "Bernese Wine of the Year" is also served at official events organized by the cantonal government.
