As the auction house Christie's announced in London on Friday, the value of the late jeweller's wine collection had previously been estimated at 1 million pounds. The entire wine collection, consisting of 2474 bottles, was sold.
Twelve bottles of Domaine Leroy, Romanée-Saint-Vivant from 1999, for example, achieved a price of 62,500 pounds, according to Christie's. Before the auction, the value of this package had been estimated at 45,000 to 60,000 pounds. Only eight percent of the sales fell short of the estimated value.
Younger collectors bid
120 people from 20 countries took part in the auction. According to the auction house, many younger collectors also bid.
Jörg G. Bucherer, born in 1936, was the third generation of his family to run the jewelry business of the same name. Under his leadership, the company grew abroad and had over one hundred branches. He died in 2023. Bucherer's estate, who had no descendants, will go to a foundation that is due to start operating in 2026. It will also receive the proceeds from the sale of the wine collection.
Bucherer mainly collected Bordeaux wines. The collection contained over 1600 bottles from the 1970 to 2005 vintages from this wine region. There were also around 500 Burgundy wines from 1995 to 2003 and just over 300 bottles of Spanish wine.
Bucherer stored his wines in his own wine cellars in Lucerne and in Marbella, Spain. Christie's described him as a passionate wine collector who always brought two bottles of wine from his collection to his favorite restaurant in Lucerne.
