The Dutch railroads announced that no trains would be running anywhere in the country until 10.00 am. Shortly afterwards, train services slowly started up again. The winter weather is also continuing to cause problems on the roads and at Amsterdam's major airport Schiphol. Around 350 flights have already been canceled.
France is also still struggling with snow and ice. In many departments, school buses were not running after heavy snowfall in some areas. Train services were also disrupted in some regions.
Air traffic was suspended at Nantes airport in the west of the country, while there were still cancellations at Paris airports. The situation eased on the roads and freeways around Paris, where traffic was still backed up for around 1,000 kilometers on Monday afternoon. Nevertheless, according to an initial assessment, five fatalities were reported in weather-related accidents.
In the UK, it is still cold and snowing. Hundreds of schools remain closed in Scotland and the subway trains in Glasgow did not run in the morning because the power lines were iced over. Snow and ice warnings remain in place in many parts of the UK, with the weather service warning of heavy snowfall this week, particularly in the south.
Sweden is experiencing new snowfalls and temperatures of up to minus 40 degrees in the north of the country. In Denmark, the Falck rescue service urged people in North Jutland to stay at home on Wednesday in anticipation of a snowstorm. Anyone who does venture out should have a shovel with them to dig their car free.
Tens of thousands of Prague residents without heating and hot water
The Czech Republic is also still freezing cold. In the Bohemian Forest near the border with Bavaria, temperatures of around minus 25 degrees were measured in the morning. Nowhere in the country should the mercury rise above freezing point in the next few days, according to the forecast from the national weather service. In Prague, tens of thousands of residents were temporarily without heating and hot water due to a faulty district heating pipe.
Winter sports enthusiasts can rejoice: due to the snowfall, many slopes in the low mountain ranges of the Czech Republic have ideal conditions for skiing. In Poland, meanwhile, the lowest temperature during the night was minus 20.1 degrees.
Poorly insulated homes in Spain
In Spain, which regularly makes headlines in summer with record-breaking temperatures, people in many regions are now shivering in sub-zero temperatures in their often poorly insulated homes. In Madrid and also at higher altitudes on the vacation island of Mallorca, there was frost and snow. Some roads in the Pyrenees and other mountainous regions of the country were only passable with snow chains.
It could also get as cold as minus 10 degrees on Tuesday night. The weather authority Aemet issued warnings for large areas of the country due to snow, cold and sometimes gale-force winds. Those who want it a little warmer will have to travel to the Canary Islands. There it will be a pleasant 17 degrees during the day.
Bulgaria also continues to enjoy mild spring-like temperatures, with temperatures of up to 19 degrees expected in the south-east. This is very unusual for this time of year. In some regions, strong winds are giving people a hard time. Meteorologists are expecting a snowfall with icy cold temperatures on Thursday.
