Queensland authorities said that more than 600 millimetres of rain had fallen in parts of the state in 24 hours. In view of the heavy rainfall, residents in the flood-prone areas of Townsville were ordered to evacuate. The local airport had to be closed and the university hospital had to postpone operations.
The Premier of Queensland, David Crisafulli, warned on Sunday of further rainfall that could lead to "record rainfall". The Department of the Environment warned the public to be wary of crocodiles, which may be roaming "in search of calmer waters".
