In future, women will have to attend the army and civil defense orientation day. The Federal Council wants to encourage more women to do voluntary service.

On Wednesday, the Federal Council opened the consultation on the constitutional amendment required for the mandatory orientation day. This will allow the people and the cantons to vote on it. Laws must also be amended before the first calls for women can be sent out.

The Federal Council assumes that this will be the case by the beginning of 2030. The orientation day is already compulsory for young men. If all women also took part, they would gain a better insight into the possibilities and opportunities in the army and civil defense, the Federal Council wrote.

Thanks to the in-depth information, he expects more women to volunteer and the proportion of women in the army and civil defense to increase. Today, women can take part in the orientation program on a voluntary basis; around 1,200 do so each year.
