Following strong growth in 2024, passenger numbers at Zurich Airport continued to climb at the start of the new year 2025. The main reason for this was the strong increase in local travelers.

A total of 2.08 million passengers traveled through Switzerland's largest airport in January. This was 6.4 percent more than in the same month last year, as the airport announced on Wednesday evening. The increase was primarily due to local passengers. Their number rose by 9.0 percent to 1.45 million, while transfer passengers also increased slightly by 0.8 percent to 0.63 million.

Slightly lower load factor

The number of flight movements also increased in January: take-offs and landings at Zurich Airport amounted to 19,491, an increase of 5.7% compared to the previous year.

At the same time, the capacity utilization of the aircraft decreased slightly: An average of 124 passengers were on board, which was 0.8 percent fewer than in January last year. This meant that 73 out of 100 seats were occupied. This was around 1 seat fewer than a year ago.

Store sales lagging behind

Commercial sales also increased, but were not quite able to keep pace with the growth in passenger numbers. Turnover in the stores rose by 2.7 percent overall to 44.2 million francs.

The majority of this was attributable to the stores behind the security checkpoint, the so-called airside, where sales rose by 8.4 percent to 24.2 million francs. In contrast, sales on the landside fell by 3.3 percent to 23.2 million.

Meanwhile, 32,814 tons of freight were handled at Zurich Airport. This was around 3 percent more than in the previous year.
