The Office of the Attorney General of the Canton of Zurich confirmed receipt of the criminal complaint, as reported by the news portal "Inside Paradeplatz". It is not providing any further information on the content of the complaint or when it was filed, citing the ongoing proceedings.
According to various media reports, the Department of Economic Affairs, headed by Government Councillor Carmen Walker Späh (FDP), and the former chief official concerned are also not commenting on the ongoing proceedings.
The accused was head of the Office of Economic Affairs and Labor for 14 years. In September 2019, the cantonal government announced, without giving reasons, that Carmen Walker Späh and the manager would be terminating their employment relationship by mutual agreement.
As a senior civil servant, Sauter attracted attention with his comparatively direct manner - the NZZ newspaper described him as "undiplomatic" because he did not mince his words.
As head of the office, for example, he criticized the then Director of Justice Marin Graf in an interview, who had spoken positively about the 1:12 initiative. After his departure, he attracted attention with an article on "Inside Paradeplatz"; under the title "Rosengartentunnel - ein selbstverliebtes Strassenprojekt", he spoke out vehemently against the project of Walker Späh's Department of Economic Affairs before the ballot.
