The Zurich cantonal police were called out around 170 times on New Year's Eve. Most of the deployments concerned the improper setting off of fireworks. The police were often called out to municipalities where fireworks are prohibited.

Six letterboxes were also blown up, as the Zurich cantonal police reported on Thursday morning. Trees, hedges, garbage cans and containers were also set on fire on New Year's Eve.

In Winterthur, the police had to launch an investigation into arson. Unknown persons set fire to letterboxes at a residential building.

Several people were turned away at the main railway station, the police added. Six people were arrested on suspicion of property offenses, violations of the Foreign Nationals and Integration Act or because they were wanted.
