Watching films in the water at sunset, as in the Badikino Ebnat-Kappel: this is just one of the options offered by open-air cinemas. Cinema in the open air is also possible against a mountain backdrop or in a city garden.

In Switzerland this year, around 300 open-air cinemas in all parts of the country are offering movie experiences in the open air - from Aarau to Zweisimmen, from Agno to Zurich. The Keystone-SDA news agency presents its four favorites among the smaller ones.
THE OPEN AIR CINEMA IN SAAS-GRUND: The open-air cinema has existed since 2017. According to Dominic Plaschy from Saas Valley Tourism, it was founded with the aim of "promoting culture and community in the open air and creating a cinematic experience in a special atmosphere". The special thing about the event is the combination of the impressive mountain backdrop, a carefully compiled film program and an informal atmosphere that appeals to visitors and locals of all ages.
Running: July 2 to August 13. One screening a week. Animated films are shown. From "The Secret Life of Pets" to "The Garfield Movie" and "Tom & Jerry".
KINO IM BEET IN RAPPERSWIL-JONA: The open-air cinema was founded in 2023 and is now in its third round. "Our cinema is much more than just a movie night in the open air," says Flora Frommelt from the Zeughausgarten association. "It's an overall summer experience in the middle of a garden." Between flower beds and vegetable islands, the area is transformed into a movie theater. "Every guest," says Frommelt, "is given a chair and can place it wherever they like in the garden - closer to the movie action or secluded between the lavender and tomato bushes." This special setting, the freedom of space and the curated program make the cinema screenings a sensual and relaxing experience. The Zeughausgarten is located in the middle of the town of Rapperswil-Jona. Initiated as an interim use in 2019, the gray square has been transformed into a modular, urban city garden.
Running from July 10 to 20, a total of nine films will be shown, including "Like a Complete Unknown", "Perfect Days" and "Frieda's Fall".
OPEN AIR CINEMA AT ERLEBNISBAD WALLBACH: The event has been running since 2021 and is being held for the fifth time this year. "We wanted to offer the tourist resort of Lenk a new attraction and also raise awareness of our adventure pool," says co-operations manager Oliver Zimmermann. The films can be watched from the pool's terrace, but guests can also sit in the whirlpool. "This year, we have also hired a southern Italian pizzaiolo to prepare the food directly on site," says Zimmermann.
The event runs from July 28 to August 4. The program covers a wide range. "Bridget Jones", "Heroine" and "Paddington" will be shown. And with "Jurassic World: Rebirth" and "F1 - The Movie", two films that have just been released in Swiss cinemas.
BADIKINO EBNAT-KAPPEL: The cinema has existed since 2023 and is a joint initiative of Badi Ebnat-Kappel and the Passerelle Wattwil cinema. "The idea arose from the desire to combine summer swimming fun with a cultural experience and create an uncomplicated, open meeting place for all generations in Toggenburg," says Yanick Hug, Managing Director of the Passerelle cinema. The Badikino takes place in the middle of the outdoor pool - surrounded by water, mountains and a sunset atmosphere. The strong regional connection is also special. "From the film selection to the culinary supporting program and local productions, we make sure to include our valley."
