Drummer Fredy Studer died unexpectedly on Monday. He was part of the jazz group OM, which played here at the 2008 jazz festival in Willisau.

Lucerne drummer and percussionist Fredy Studer died on Monday at the age of 74. He died unexpectedly quickly after a serious illness, his management agency announced on Monday evening.
Studer was internationally renowned and, according to his management, was one of the outstanding Swiss drummers in the field of jazz and improvisation over the last 40 years. He was successful with the electric jazz freemusic band OM, founded in 1972, among others. OM is celebrating its 50th anniversary this fall with a new album.
Fredy Studer released his solo album "Now's the Time" in 2018. According to the agency, this was also how Fredy Studer thought and lived. "Presence in the moment, the power of immediacy, the energy of improvisation: that was his expression, his elixir of life."
He was a musician with an almost inexhaustible power and energy, with which he got numerous bands and projects off the ground, it continued. His most important bands included the trio "Red Twist & Tuned Arrow", the hardcore chamber music trio Koch-Schütz-Studer and his own band Phall Fatale.
Studer has played with numerous luminaries such as Joe Henderson, John Abercrombie, Miroslav Vitous, Pierre Favre, Jojo Mayer, George Gruntz, Jack DeJohnette, Charlie Mariano, Robyn Schulkowsky, Joey Baron, Jürg Halter, Roberto Dominiconi and many others.
