The Swiss Literary Archives and the Swiss National Library are expanding their collection to include the estate of the French writer André Gide. The collection includes manuscripts, personal documents and photographs.
The Fondation Catherine Gide, based in Olten SO, and its president, Professor Peter Schnyder, have donated Gide's estate to the Swiss Literary Archives (SLA), as the National Library announced on Tuesday. The SLA will catalog the collection and make it accessible to researchers and the public.
The collection bears witness to the writer's significant influence on the 20th century, it added. As a leading figure in the Nouvelle Revue francaise, which he co-founded in 1909, Gide had a significant influence on the aesthetic sensibilities and intellectual concerns of his time. In his works, he always questioned himself in subtle ways, as can be seen in "Uns nährt die Erde" (1897) or "Die Falschmünzer" (1925).
