The Basel production of Tennessee Williams' "The Glass Menagerie" and the Zurich dramatization of "Il Gattopardo" by Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa were selected, as announced by the Berliner Festspiele on Tuesday evening.

The jury described the Basel production of Tennessee Williams' "The Glass Menagerie" as "a quiet, emblematic and touching work". The production by British director Jaz Woodcock-Steward is brought to the stage with a very contemporary drive, without breaking the text, which is set in the late 1930s.

The Zurich dramatization of Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa's "Il Gattopardo" by Pinar Karabulut and Hannah Schünemann is praised as a magnificent theatrical event that has become rare. The opulence of the spaces and costumes and the mostly unbroken psychological acting of the ensemble draw the audience deep into the 19th century, according to the jury's statement.

The following are also invited to the Theatertreffen:

  • «A Year without Summer», eine Bühnenproduktion von Florentina Holzinger, Volksbühne Berlin in Koproduktion mit diversen Festivals.

  • «Der Hauptmann von Köpenick», ein deutsches Märchen von Carl Zuckmayer, Regie und Bühne: Sebastian Hartmann, Staatstheater Cottbus.

  • «Die Welt im Rücken», von Thomas Melle, Regie: Lucia Bihler, Schauspiel Stuttgart.

  • «Fräulein Else», frei nach Arthur Schnitzler, von Leonie Böhm und Julia Riedler, Regie: Böhm, Volkstheater Wien.

  • «Mephisto», nach dem Roman von Klaus Mann, Regie: Jette Steckel, Münchner Kammerspiele.

  • «Serotonin», nach dem Roman von Michel Houellebecq, Theaterfassung von Sebastian Hartmann, Hans Otto Theater, Potsdam.

  • «Three Times Left is Right», von Julian Hetzel, eine Produktion von Studio Julian Hetzel in Koproduktion unter anderem mit den Wiener Festwochen und dem Schauspiel Leipzig.

  • «Wallenstein», ein Schlachtfest in sieben Gängen, nach Friedrich Schiller, Regie: Jan-Christoph Gockel, Münchner Kammerspiele.

The Berlin Theatertreffen takes place from May 1 to 17.
