The two Olympic riders Mathias Flückiger and Nino Schurter impress at the Cross-Country World Cup in Crans-Montana with 2nd and 4th place, with Olympic champion Tom Pidcock crossing the finish line first.
The result in Valais is primarily a liberating blow for Flückiger. He silences the criticism of his Olympic selection. His best result so far this year was 6th place.
On the muddy surface, Schurter was only rarely able to unpack his specialty - he often stands on the pedals and pushes up the mountain in the saddle. This works less well in the wet due to the lack of traction. The Grisons rider took two crashes. In the final sprint he was relegated to 4th place by the Italian Luca Braidot.
Briton Pidcock was dominant. The start-finish victory of the current world champion was never in danger. Mathias Flückiger, who was 1:10 minutes behind, also rode solo for almost the entire race on the way to his 21st World Cup podium. Schurter crossed the finish line 2:08 minutes behind.
The World Championships will be held in Crans-Montana in September 2025.
