The Swiss ski crossers miss out on the podium places at the World Cup premiere in Kopaonik, Serbia. Olympic bronze medallist Alex Fiva finishes fifth, Olympic silver medallist Fanny Smith sixth.
Smith, who was only beaten by Germany's Daniela Maier at the Winter Games in Livigno a week ago, was in second place for a long time in the semi-final before being overtaken by France's Marielle Berger Sabbatel and relegated to the small final.
The victory in Kopaonik went to Sandra Näslund. The Swede celebrated her 45th World Cup victory, her sixth this winter.
Howden relegated to 4th place
In the men's race, the overall leader Reece Howden also looked set to triumph. However, the Canadian had brought down the German Florian Wilmsmann on his way to the supposed victory, whereupon the following two riders also crashed. Howden received a yellow card for his action and was relegated to 4th place.
German rider Tim Hronek was subsequently promoted to winner, winning at this stage for the first time. Just the week before, Hronek had been one of the unlucky ones because he had been unfairly slowed down by Ryan Regez from Bern in the Olympic semi-final.
Second race on Saturday
On Saturday, in Kopaonik, 260 km south of Belgrade, where the Ski Cross World Cup is being held for the first time ever, there will be an opportunity for revenge with one more race each.
