The Hurricanes, the best team of the regular season in the Eastern Conference, got off to a dream start. Seth Jarvis gave them a 1:0 lead just 33 seconds into the game. However, it didn't last long: Cole Caufield equalized for the visitors just 27 seconds later.

Phillip Danault (5th), Alexandre Texier (9th) and Ivan Demidov (12th) increased Montreal's lead to 4:1 in the opening period. The best scorers for the Canadiens were Juraj Slafkovsky, who had set up Caufield's 1:1 and scored twice in the final period, and Nick Suzuki with three assists.

It was the Hurricanes' first defeat in these playoffs. They had previously won the best-of-7 series against the Ottawa Senators and Philadelphia Flyers with 4-0 victories.

Game 2 of the semi-final against the Canadiens will again take place in Raleigh, North Carolina, on Sunday night Swiss time.
