The Spengler Cup in the Old Year's week will feature a novelty. For the first time, a selection of college players will take part in the traditional Davos tournament.
The team will start as the US Collegiate Selects. Players from the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the most important college championship in the USA, are eligible for the selection. Foreign players who take part in this championship can also be selected.
In 1981, the University of Minnesota and one year later the University of North Dakota competed in the Spengler Cup. Both college teams finished in last place more than 40 years ago. However, a selection with the best college players has never competed in Davos.
The US Collegiate Selects complete the field of participants. In addition to Davos and title holders Fribourg-Gottéron, IFK Helsinki, Sparta Prague and Team Canada will be in action from St. Stephen's Day.
