A World Cup organized by the NHL is to take place again in three years' time. The North American professional league will announce which nations will take part in 2028 after a twelve-year break.

"International competitions at the highest level are very important for our players - representing their countries on the ice is in their DNA," said NHL commissioner Gary Bettman on the sidelines of a four-nation tournament currently taking place.

"Resuming Olympic participation next season and hosting a World Cup of Hockey in February 2028 will give more players the opportunity to represent their nations in best-on-best competitions," Bettman continued. After the best league in the world did not release any players at two recent Winter Games, the world's best professional ice hockey players will be represented in Milan next year for the first time since Sochi 2014.

The NHL had previously held the World Cup of Hockey in 1996, 2004 and 2016 with different nations. NHL players also play in the World Cup, which is organized annually by the world association. However, many of the best professionals are missing due to the NHL playoffs taking place at the same time.
