Adrian Newey has a new employer. The 65-year-old Briton will be working for the Aston Martin Formula 1 team in future.
At the beginning of May, Newey put an end to the rumors surrounding his employment with the Red Bull racing team. He let the public know that he would be leaving the team led by world champion Max Verstappen next spring.
Newey kept the extent to which the internal squabbles over power and influence and the bickering surrounding the "Christian Horner affair" drove him to this decision to himself. Typical of him, who has never been a man of big words, preferring to let his actions speak for themselves in the technical field, in the construction of racing cars.
However, the separation after 19 years of working together naturally triggered new speculation. Newey, for his part, wanted to take his time in deciding on his professional future. This also suits him, who does not aim to implement his designs and ideas, which are still sketched out on the drawing board, in a fast-track process.
Maranello, the base of Scuderia Ferrari, was repeatedly mentioned as the first address for Newey's new place of work. Following the signing of Lewis Hamilton for the coming season, a move by his compatriot seemed the most logical of all options.
But Newey will not be a Red, he will be a Green. The people in charge of the Aston Martin team, led by billionaire co-owner Lawrence Stroll, kept the better end of the bargain when it came to wooing the man with the promise of success.
"This is the most exciting news in Aston Martin's history," said Lawrence Stroll after the deal was finalized. Newey will work as a shareholder and managing technical partner at the racing team with current drivers Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll, Lawrence Stroll's son. He is due to start work on March 1 next year.
