The Austrians led 2-0 after the first period, with Peter Schneider of series champions Salzburg and Marco Kasper, forward of the Detroit Red Wings, scoring his second goal of the tournament to raise hopes of a first tangible result. The Slovaks were able to equalize by the middle of the third period, but Schneider Austria once again decided the game in the penalty shootout.

The success was particularly good news after the unfortunate defeats in the first two games against Finland and Sweden. Against Sweden, Bader's team was beaten 2:4 despite leading 2:1 until just over two minutes before the end.
