Third home win at this year's Giro d'Italia: 32-year-old Tuscan Alberto Bettiol wins the 13th stage solo, which leads from Alessandria to the coast of Lake Maggiore to Verbania.
Bettiol pulled away from the last rivals on the only long climb around 15 kilometers before the finish and took a commanding victory. The Norwegian Andreas Leknessund in second place lost 26 seconds to the Italian, while the Belgian Jasper Stuyven in third place finished 44 seconds behind.
The trio was part of the 15-strong breakaway group that had formed early on in the race and built up a lead of over ten minutes. Johan Jacobs, a Swiss rider, was also at the front. The 29-year-old from Zurich, one of three from the Groupama-FDJ team in the escape group, dropped out of the decision around 18 kilometers before the finish after he had done some leading work for the chosen leader Josh Kench. However, the New Zealander had to settle for 6th place, while Jacobs finished 15th, 4:13 minutes behind in Verbania, near the Swiss border.
The riders will return to Switzerland on Tuesday, when the 16th stage leads from Bellinzona to Cari. Before that, a difficult mountain stage is already on the program on Saturday, which will probably cost the Portuguese rider Afonso Eulalio the leader's jersey. The 133-kilometre stage leads from Aosta to Pila. Three first-category climbs have to be tackled, including the one up to the stage finish. Top favorite Jonas Vingegaard is 33 seconds behind Eulalio in the overall standings.
