It is not Anna Jurt, the former European junior champion, but Alexandre Dällenbach, the former triathlete, who is making an excellent start in the Olympic modern pentathlon.
Switzerland was last represented in the modern pentathlon at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. Back then, Belinda Schreiber was flirting with a medal as the clear outsider, but fell back from 3rd to 11th place in the end.
Alexandre Dällenbach is still aiming for medals in Paris. The Swiss fencer started with 9 wins from the first 10 bouts, where everyone competes against everyone else. This was followed by a somewhat weaker phase and then another rebellion at the end: with 21 wins and 14 defeats, the 33-year-old, who lives in La Réunion, finished fencing in 5th place with an impressive win rate (66.66%).
Anna Jurt fared less well. The 22-year-old from Nidwalden, who lives in Bern, lost more often than she won (17:18 record). She is in 17th place in the intermediate rankings.
Modern pentathlon has changed since Beijing and Switzerland's last participation in the Olympics. In the World Cup, qualification and the final are held within one day. At the Olympics, the competition lasts several days. In addition to fencing, the modern pentathlon consists of swimming, riding with horses drawn by lot and the laser run (shooting and running).
