The American gymnasts are the favorites to win the women's team final. The team led by superstar Simone Biles relegates Italy and Brazil to the other medal positions.

In the Paris-Bercy hall, the USA were crowned Olympic champions for the fourth time in the team competition. For Italy, it was only the second precious metal with the team after 1928 - when the Europeans also won silver. The top three finish for Brazil was even a first.

Italy clearly distanced

Under the eyes of Serena Williams, the US team of Simone Biles, Hezly Rivera, Jordan Chiles, Sunisa Lee and Jade Carey more than lived up to their role as favorites. Led by the exceptionally talented Biles, the Americans scored 171.296 points - over 5.5 points more than Italy.

Biles, who three years ago was mainly responsible for the fact that the heavy favorites USA "only" finished in second place, won her fifth Olympic gold in Paris. In Tokyo, the then 24-year-old completely failed her vault, whereupon she abandoned the competition and later declared that she was suffering from mental health problems. Biles was not deterred by a slight calf injury and led her country to gold - just like in Rio in 2016.

Biles with four more medal chances

Biles is still qualified for four of the five individual finals in Paris, with the exception of the uneven bars. Her next final, the all-around, is scheduled for Thursday.

Russia, who surprisingly won the Olympics three years ago, was not represented in Paris. The reason for this is the war of aggression against Ukraine, as a result of which the International Olympic Committee excluded Russian teams from the Games.

The Swiss gymnasts did not qualify for the Olympic Games.
