Anja Weber/Nadine Fähndrich win World Championship bronze in the team sprint

For a long time, it looked like a thankless 4th place for the Swiss duo. In the third of six laps, Anja Weber had to let the top trio go. At the last handover, the 23-year-old from the Zurich Oberland was almost seven seconds behind the podium.

Nadine Fähndrich, who already won bronze in the individual sprint last week, ignited the turbo on the 1.4 km long final lap on the last climb and caught the exhausted Finn Jasmi Joensuu after the descent on the home straight.

As expected, gold went to the Swedes Jonna Sundling and Maja Dahlqvist. Silver went to the American duo Jessie Diggins/Julia Kern.

It was Anja Weber's first medal at a major elite event and Nadine Fähndrich's third World Championship medal overall, her second in the team sprint. In 2021, the 29-year-old from Lucerne won silver in Oberstdorf with Laurien van der Graaff.

The last time Swiss-Ski won two medals at a World Championships was in 2013, when Dario Cologna took gold and silver.

8th place for Riebli/Grond

Meanwhile, Janik Riebli and Valerio Grond clearly missed out on a medal in eighth place. The dream of precious metal was shattered in the fifth of six laps, when Riebli could no longer keep up with the chasing group behind the superior winners from Norway. In the end, the Swiss were just 25 seconds off the podium.

Gold clearly went to the Norwegians Johannes Klaebo and Erik Valnes, who were in a class of their own. They easily beat Finland's Ristomatti Hakola and Lauri Vuorinen and Sweden's Oskar Svensson and Edvin Anger.

It is Klaebo's fourth World Championship gold medal in his fourth race and a historic one at that, as he now joins cross-country record holder Peter Northug with 13 World Championship titles.
