Annik Kälin misses her own Swiss record at the all-around meeting in Götzis. In the last two disciplines, she was unable to maintain her record course due to groin problems.
In the javelin throw, groin problems only allowed the best Swiss heptathlete to make one attempt. With 39.88 m, she fell far short of her Swiss record in this discipline last summer on her way to silver at the Olympic Games in Paris. The opportunity to set a new record was gone.
Her decision to sit out the javelin throw later proved to be a precautionary measure. The 25-year-old was back at the start in the final 800 m race and finished the competition in 5th place with 6395 points. In Paris she had achieved 6639 points.
Kälin can take a lot of positives from the two days in Vorarlberg three and a half months before the World Championships in Tokyo. After the first five events, she was clearly on course for a record. She set a new personal best in the 200 m (23.42) and also performed very convincingly in the 100 m hurdles (13.05), high jump (1.77) and long jump (6.77).
Sandra Röthlin, the second Swiss athlete in the field of 25, finished 13th with a personal best (6106 points). The victory went to the outstanding American Anna Hall. She broke the 7000-point barrier with a heptathlon best over 800 m (2:01.23) - only the fifth athlete in history to do so. Only world record holder Jackie Joyner-Kersee managed more than her 7032 points.
