Anouk Vergé-Dépré and Joana Mäder's last tournament together will not take place. Because Vergé-Dépré is suffering from pneumonia, the beach volleyball duo will miss the SM in Bern.

Two weeks ago, Vergé-Dépré from Bern and Mäder from Zurich announced that they would only be playing three tournaments together. As a result, the Olympic bronze medalists from Tokyo were eliminated in the quarter-finals at both the European Championships in the Netherlands and the Elite 16 tournament in Hamburg. The eight-year collaboration should have come to an end on the Bundesplatz in Bern, where the Swiss Championships will be held from Wednesday to Friday.

"I would have loved to celebrate the end of eight years together with Joana and the home crowd in Bern. To consciously celebrate points once again and then leave the court together. It's sad that this moment is being taken away from us," says Vergé-Dépré, who had already felt the first symptoms of illness last weekend in Hamburg.

Mäder finds it "extremely sad that we can't play and enjoy this last Swiss championship as a team. But health comes first, that's quite clear." The Zurich native will only be able to attend Bern as a spectator. Due to the short notice and the regulations, no other team constellation was possible.
