The day after his elimination in the 400 meter freestyle, Antonio Djakovic was also very disappointed in the half distance. All the other Swiss athletes were also eliminated.
Djakovic, who fell ill at the beginning of the week, only finished seventh and last in his preliminary heat. In 1:47.46, the Zurich native was more than two seconds off his Swiss record and more than a second slower than a month ago at the European Championships in Belgrade.
In the overall rankings, Djakovic, who came third in the European Championships, only managed 17th place, missing out on advancing to the semi-finals by one position and less than a tenth.
The 21-year-old's only remaining hope is that one of the swimmers qualified ahead of him withdraws before the semi-finals in the evening, in which case he could move up.
Mityukov missing a hundredth
Roman Mityukov, supposedly Switzerland's greatest trump card in the Olympic pool, also failed to score on Sunday in Paris. The Geneva native only finished 17th in the 100-metre backstroke - just like Antonio Djakovic an hour earlier.
Mityukov needed 53.94 seconds, one hundredth of a second too slow to get through a round. This is what the 24-year-old is aiming for in the 200 meter backstroke. He has already won a medal twice at the world championships in his favorite discipline.
Thierry Bollin was also eliminated in the 100 meter backstroke. The swimmer from Bern finished 26th with a time of 54.21.
European Championship silver medallist Mamié also out
Lisa Mamié was eliminated in the preliminary heats of the 100 meter breaststroke. The Zurich native finished 23rd in 1:07.65. Mamié, who won silver in the two-length event in Belgrade in June, would have needed a time of 1:06.88 to reach the semi-finals of the top 16.
