Around 30 athletes are expected to represent the Swiss colors at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo in mid-September.
This figure was given by Philipp Bandi, Head of Competitive Sports at Swiss Athletics, at the Swiss Athletics Media Day. In addition to the two qualified women's relay teams, Bandi expects around 25 individual starts.
Bandi referred to the change in the international calendar. The 2027 World Championships in Beijing will also not take place until mid-September. And in 2026, the year of the European Championships, the world federation will launch the Ultimate Championship in Budapest in mid-September. The world's best players will compete against each other in 28 disciplines, with no preliminary rounds.
This contrasts with the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, which will take place in the second half of July.
