The 39-year-old Gabriela Timar won her title fight against the Japanese champion Marina Loreto over ten rounds on points in the Kursaal in Bern. This makes her the first Swiss female world champion of one of the major international boxing federations.

The atomweight, up to 46.2 kg, is the lowest weight class in boxing. The Asian had previously been unbeaten in ten fights, for Timar it was her 16th victory in her 18th fight.
