Alexis Bayard finishes the individual competition at the epee fencers' home World Cup tournament in Berne as the best Swiss. The big success story does not materialize.
Bayard was the last Swiss to fail in the round of 16 at the Grand Prix de Berne in Gümligen. The 29-year-old from Valais was narrowly defeated 10:11 by Hungary's Tibor Andrasfi. In the previous round, Bayard celebrated a 15:5 victory against Gergely Siklosi, Andrasfi's compatriot and number 3 seed.
In addition to Bayard, who reached the final in Bern three years ago where he lost out to compatriot Lucas Malcotti, Théo Brochard and Gabriel Bonferroni also made it through two qualifying rounds into the direct elimination round. However, the Vaud native and the Genevan were eliminated in the first knockout round on Saturday morning.
Lucas Malcotti and Ian Hauri, both members of the senior national team, failed to qualify and will go into the team competition on Sunday feeling rested.
