At the beginning of 2022, Italy's tennis star asked the German legend - as Becker has now confirmed. But then a ruling from London intervened.

According to Boris Becker, he almost became the coach of Italian tennis star Jannik Sinner. The 57-year-old confirmed in the newspaper "Corriere della Sera" that there had been concrete talks about this at the beginning of 2022. A few weeks later, however, the three-time Wimbledon winner was sentenced to two and a half years in prison by a court in London for bankruptcy offenses. He had to serve seven and a half months of this sentence.

Becker recommended Australian for Sinner

Becker told the newspaper from Milan, where he has been living for some time, about Sinner's request: "I thought it was a secret. I never spoke about it. It's true." At the time, however, he was waiting for the verdict from London.

"I said to Jannik: 'I don't know what the outcome will be. I can't commit myself'." So he gave Sinner a few names - including the Australian Darren Cahill, who has been coaching the South Tyrolean since the summer of 2022. Since then, Sinner has won four Grand Slam tournaments.

The "Corriere" also asked Becker whether he might take over the 24-year-old's coaching job later on. His answer: "Today I'm in a different phase of my life. My family is growing, I have a new business. I don't want to be on the road so much anymore, and perhaps the role of coach is slowly becoming too narrow for me."
