One matchday before the end of the league phase, SC Bern is through to the last 16 of the Champions Hockey League.
In dire straits in the domestic league, but successful in Europe: SC Bern celebrated its third victory in the fifth game of the league phase with a 7-0 win against the Belfast Giants and can no longer be ousted from the top 16.
The Bernese fulfilled their compulsory task against the British champions from Northern Ireland in their first game under new coach Heinz Ehlers with aplomb. Emil Bernström scored the opening goal after just 37 seconds in front of a good 6000 spectators, and after the first period it was 3-0 against the bottom of the table without a win. The Swede Bernström, with only two scoring points in the National League, scored three times.
Lausanne's European performance, on the other hand, was very disappointing. After a 4:7 defeat at French champions Grenoble, the play-off finalists no longer have a chance of reaching the knockout round. With just three points from five games, the Vaud side are in second-last place - only Belfast is worse.
