SC Bern has put itself in a good starting position in the first leg of the round of 16 of the Champions Hockey League. Heinz Ehlers' team wins 2:1 away from home against the Swedes from Brynäs, while the ZSC Lions draw 4:4 at home against KalPa Kuopio.

In Gävle, around two hours' drive north of Stockholm, the Bernese team took the lead twice. Twice a combination between the two goal scorers Benjamin Baumgartner and Marco Lehmann was successful. The Swedes were able to respond to Baumgartner's 1:0 (27.) with a power play goal in the final third. Lehmann's 2:1 in the 55th minute meant victory for Bern. The second leg will take place next Tuesday at SCB.

The ZSC Lions showed morale in their home game against KalPa Kuopio, the runners-up in the qualifiers. Twice they squandered a lead, twice they made up for a deficit and thus travel to Kuopio in a week's time with their chances intact for the second leg on Wednesday.

The Finnish champions countered Willy Riedi's 1:0 in the first period on the power play with two goals in the space of just over two minutes. And after Andy Andreoff and Denis Malgin had also put Zurich back in the lead with a brace in the middle period, the next turning point came thanks to a fine solo effort by Aleksi Klemetti and Andreas Okany, who scored twice. Sven Andrighetto, last season's MVP, made it 4:4 in the power play with just over five minutes remaining.

EV Zug, the third Swiss club in the round of 16, will play its first leg against Sparta Prague on Wednesday.
