HC Davos cannot defend last year's victory at the Spengler Cup. In the semi-final of its home tournament, HCD loses 2:4 to Fribourg-Gottéron.
Fribourg is in the final for the first time in its third appearance and will face the Straubing Tigers from Germany on Silver Tuesday afternoon. The game was decided in the final period, which Gottéron won 3-0. Fribourg-born Christoph Bertschy scored the winning goal with just over four minutes remaining to make it 3-2.
The Dragons had made a miserable start to the tournament, but saved themselves in extremis against last year's finalists Dynamo Pardubice by reaching extra time and a penalty shoot-out. Although they lost this, the one point was enough to win the group and advance directly to the semi-finals thanks to a win against Kärpät Oulu.
There they dominated HC Davos impressively at the start. However, the 1:0 lead through Linden Vey in the power play was too little reward. In the last three minutes of the opening period, however, Matej Stransky and Yannick Frehner turned the tide out of the blue. Fribourg lost quite a bit of momentum as a result.
It wasn't until the 47th minute that Vey managed to equalize again, once more in overtime. Things then became hectic with a series of penalties. However, Davos made the decisive mistake. After a quick counter-attack, Christoph Bertschy converted Samuel Walser's perfect pass four minutes before the end. For the third time this season - after two games in the National League - the away team won.
With Fribourg-Gottéron and the Spengler Cup debutants Straubing Tigers, two newcomers to the final will meet on New Year's Eve afternoon (12.10 pm). Since the two-year break due to coronavirus, only Swiss teams - Ambri-Piotta (2022) and Davos (2023) - have won. The last German winners of the Spengler Cup were the Cologne Sharks exactly a quarter of a century ago.
