Biniam Girmay from Eritrea wins the 8th stage of the Tour de France. The African beat sprint ace Jasper Philipsen on the uphill finishing straight.
After the slightly undulating 183.4 km between Semur-en-Auxois and Colombey-les-Deux-Eglises, Girmay surprisingly won in the green sprint jersey for the second time at this year's Tour. The 24-year-old had more power in his legs at the end than the Belgian Philipsen and his compatriot Arnaud de Lie.
Tadej Pogacar remained in yellow. The Slovenian was not attacked. Remo Evenepoel is 33 seconds behind, Jonas Vingegaard is in third place with a gap of 1:15 minutes.
The route on Sunday will lead over gravel roads and dirt tracks around Troyes. The organizers have therefore included a gravel stage. The riders in the race for the overall classification could suffer serious time losses due to crashes or defects. There are a total of 14 gravel sections over a length of 32 km.
