Alex Newhook successfully completed a counter-attack in the 12th minute of overtime to secure their fifth away win in the series. The Canadiens had previously squandered a 2-0 lead and seemed to have lost the momentum in the Sabres' stadium.
The last four remaining teams in the NHL playoffs have now been decided: the Canadiens will face the Carolina Hurricanes, while the Colorado Avalanche will play the Vegas Golden Knights.
Montreal's success also keeps alive hopes of the first Canadian Stanley Cup winner since 1993. Back then, the Canadiens celebrated the last triumph of a Canadian NHL team.
