The top favorite Demi Vollering wins her first title in the solo road race at the European Cycling Championships in South Africa. Elise Chabbey finishes fourth, as she did at the World Championships.

Elise Chabbey once again showed a strong race, but just like a week ago at the World Championships in Rwanda, the Geneva rider was poorly rewarded with 4th place. However, she was over a minute behind bronze. Three of the big favorites were too strong.

Demi Vollering was already a Tour de France and Vuelta winner as well as a three-time World Championship medalist, but now the 28-year-old Dutchwoman won her first title in an individual race. She completed the last 38 of the 116 kilometers from Privas to Guilherand-Granges alone and triumphed 1:18 minutes ahead of Poland's Kasia Niewiadoma and 1:24 minutes ahead of her compatriot Anna van der Breggen.

Nine of the ten European Championship road races to date have been won by Dutch women. Noemi Rüegg finished 20th and Steffi Häberlin 36th. Marlen Reusser decided not to start after a mammoth program in recent weeks.
