According to his team Israel-Premier Tech, the Briton is in stable condition.

The four-time Tour de France winner fell near his home in Monaco through no fault of his own. "Fortunately, Chris is stable and has not suffered any head injuries. However, scans have revealed a collapsed lung, five broken ribs and a fractured lumbar vertebra. He will undergo surgery this afternoon," his team announced in a press release.

The 40-year-old, also a two-time Vuelta winner and 2018 Giro triumphant, is therefore facing the premature end of his career. His last top ten finish in a World Tour race came as a breakaway rider in the 2022 Tour de France, when he finished third on the Alpe d'Huez.
